For the first time, the QMJHL expanded to the United States.

The Plattsburgh Pioneers arrived with the best of intentions.

Nevertheless, the adventure of team owner and coach Denis Méthot would rapidly go south. The American-born players who made up the team simply weren't talented enough to compete at the major junior level.

In 1984-85, after 17 consecutive winless games in the regular season, the Plattsburgh Pioneers closed their doors. The Pioneers would become the only team in QMJHL history to close its doors in the midst of a season.
