Personal: Last season Bob Lowes reached a couple of significant milestones. He notched his 400th coaching win in the WHL in only his 10th year in the league. It was the fastest any coach had reached the prestigious plateau and puts Lowes in select company as only the seventh coach to pass the mark. After leading the Pats to a surprising 40-win season, Lowes was honoured as the WHL and CHL Coach of the Year. Lowes is the only two-time recipient of the CHLs Coach of the Year honours.
Lowes played in the WHL from 1982 to 1984
with Price Albert and Regina. He captained the Pats during the 1983-84 season.
Following his junior playing career, Lowes was an assistant coach for one
season with the Pats before he moved on to the University of Manitoba where he
played for two years under current Philadelphia Flyers assistant coach Wayne
Fleming. Injuries forced Lowes to end his playing career early, but
the chance to move behind the bench came again.
Lowes spent two years (1989-90 to
1990-91) coaching the Nipawin Hawks of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League
before taking an assistant coaching position with the Seattle Thunderbirds
in 1991. He coached the Brandon Wheat Kings
from 1992 to 2001 and led the Wheat Kings to the WHL Championship in 1996.
Lowes now makes his full-time home in Regina with his wife Shelley and children Alycia (9), Mikayla (7) and Robert (6).
Personal: This will be the Eighth
season for Bryan Maxwell at the helm as General Manager and Coach of the
Lethbridge Hurricanes. After taking over the team and organization early in the
1995-96 season, Maxi has helped to lead the Hurricanes on and off the ice in
making the organization one of the strongest in the western hockey league.
Under Bryan Maxwell,
the Hurricanes captured their first ever Western Hockey League Championship in
the 1996-97 season. They defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds in four games to win
the W.H.L title and advance to the championship game of the 1997 Memorial Cup
in Hull, Quebec.
Lifetime, Maxwell has
a 221-218-44 record as a coach of the Hurricanes and is 386-365-63 coaching in
the Western Hockey League. He is only the 8th coach to post over 300 WHL
victories, a group that includes Paddy Ginnell, Jack Shupe, Doug Sauter, Ernie
MacLean and Bob Lowes.
Maxwell played in the
WHL with the Medicine Hat tigers before an extensive professional career in
both the WHA and NHL. He returned to junior to coach, and led Medicine Hat to
their first ever Memorial Cup championship in 1987. Maxi was back in the NHL
the following season behind the bench of the Los Angeles Kings, including Wayne
Gretzky. Junior Hockey is where Bryan excels as he returned to the WHL the
following year to coach the Spokane Chiefs. Under Maxwell, the Chiefs won the
Memorial Cup in 1991.
Personal: A former Western Hockey League and Canadian Hockey League Executive of the Year, Kelly McCrimmon is entering his fourteenth season as general manager of the club.
A strong believer in scouting and player development, McCrimmon has been instrumental in the Wheat Kings' continued success both on the ice and at the draft table. Since rejoining the Wheat Kings in the late eighties, McCrimmon has helped to build a President's Cup Champion (1996). As well, his clubs have earned two trips to the Memorial Cup.
He is very proud of the development and loyalty of his scouting staff. A former captain of the Wheat Kings, Kelly and his wife Terry are the parents of two children, Chelsea and Micky and reside in the Brandons west end.
